Physical development in futsal: small game, big gains
Futsal, the fast-paced indoor variant of traditional football, packs serious physical development into forty minutes. The smaller court and constant involvement mean more sprints, more turns, more touches and more decisions per minute than almost any other format of the game.
For young players, that adds up: agility, balance and coordination built naturally through play — not drills.
Why futsal is the best training for youth footballers
Futsal is crucial for youth football development because it emphasises the skills vital for players' growth. A smaller, heavier ball accelerates skill development and rewards close control. Tight spaces force quicker decisions. And with only five players on court, nobody hides — every player is involved in every phase of the game.
It's why so many of the world's best grew up playing it. The habits built on the court transfer straight to the full-size pitch.
Welcome to Stevenage Futsal Club
We officially launched in 2020 — just as the pandemic kicked in, leaving us with no real sessions or contact time with players until 2021. In the autumn and winter of 2021 we launched again with sessions for U9–11s and U12–14s that have grown steadily ever since.
Since then our players have taken part in weekly sessions, games against Stevenage FC Academy and Mid Beds Futsal, round-robin tournaments, and even the UEFA B Futsal Course at St George's Park. We're just getting started.
